In the heart of Dortmund, the Speicherstraße project has been a beacon of urban development, thanks to a significant investment from the city, federal and state urban development funding, EU funds from the EFRE program, and urban development and city funds.

The project, spearheaded by the Speicherstraße harbour quarter, has brought about a remarkable transformation, creating new plazas, green spaces, play areas, and a promenade along the harbor bank. Four of the eight high-rise projects in the southern part of the quarter have already been completed, including the notable Heimathafen Nordstadt.

Andreas Koch, Chairman of the Social City Foundation and Managing Director of GrünBau gGmbH, underscores the importance of the Heimathafen Nordstadt project for cohesion in the quarter. Stefan Szuggat, Dortmund City Councilor for Environment, Planning, and Housing, sees the development of Stadt- and Schmiedinghafen as an opportunity to create a quarter with a unique waterside character.

The Speicherstraße project also boasts a distinctive design, featuring restored historic paving, Corten steel, shipping containers, and other harbor-typical design elements. In 2024, a historic harbor crane was reinstalled as part of the project, adding to its authentic charm.

Beyond its physical transformation, the Speicherstraße project is also making a difference in the lives of the community. Yacouba Coulibaly, a founding member of "Care Leaver" Dortmund e.V., emphasizes the importance of stable points of contact for those who lacked home stability in their youth or had to flee to foreign countries.

While specific information about the Care Leaver association's impact in Heimathafen Nordstadt, Dortmund, is not readily available, a Care Leaver association typically supports young people transitioning out of the foster care or youth welfare system, providing them with social integration, education, housing, and emotional support.
