Mondi Invests €20M to Boost Sustainability at Frantschach Mill

Mondi is investing €20 million to enhance the sustainability of its pulp production at the Frantschach mill in Austria. The project, aligned with the company's Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), aims to boost efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

The investment will modernize and expand the evaporation plant, increasing heat extraction and reducing steam needs. This will not only improve efficiency but also decrease the chemical oxygen demand of biological waste water treatment by 140 tons annually.

The Frantschach mill, already self-sufficient in energy, will continue to supply surplus heat to nearby communities. The new plant equipment will also enable Mondi to increase the proportion of tall oil, a by-product used in paints, adhesives, or films, from 18 kg to 35 kg per ton of pulp. This move aligns with Mondi's goal to make better use of wood as a primary input in pulp production.

Construction of the new evaporation plant begins immediately and is set to be commissioned in autumn 2023.

Mondi's €20 million investment at the Frantschach mill demonstrates its commitment to sustainable practices. The modernization will enhance energy efficiency, reduce waste, and increase the use of valuable by-products, all while maintaining the mill's role as a community energy supplier.
