Museum in Harlem to Reinstall Exhibits by November

The Studio Museum in Harlem is set to reopen its doors on November 15, 2025, after a seven-year rebuild following its closure in 2018. The new 82,000-square-foot building, designed by Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson as executive architect, promises a dynamic blend of exhibitions, community programming, and enhanced spaces designed to celebrate and elevate Black art and culture.

The reopening will be celebrated with a Community Day event, activating the entire building from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, welcoming the public. This day will include free admission for all, marking the beginning of weekly “Studio Sundays” programming.

Key reopening details include a major survey exhibition on artist and activist Tom Lloyd, whose work was part of the museum’s inaugural 1968 exhibition. The opening season will also include four exhibitions, two site-specific commissions, and works from the museum’s permanent collection. The museum will offer long-term artist residencies with newly dedicated studio spaces.

The new building has more than a 70% increase in space, including 14,000 square feet of state-of-the-art exhibition galleries, a rooftop terrace, flexible program spaces, and a lounge for artists-in-residence. The design reflects Harlem’s cultural and architectural heritage, contributing to the neighborhood’s vibrant identity.

The museum will operate hours of Wednesday through Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm, with late nights on Friday and Saturday until 9 pm. Admission is suggested pricing with adults at $16, seniors and students $9, and free admission for children 16 and under.

Visitors can expect additional offerings such as the Museum Store featuring items from Black-owned businesses and new publications. The museum also launches its first podcast series featuring conversations with artists from its collection.

The new Studio Museum in Harlem will be ready for conversations, performances, and cross-town traffic from gallery to neighborhood spots. The opening season will also include the first rotation from the permanent collection, now nearly nine thousand works, and a presentation of new works on paper by more than one hundred alumni of the Artist-in-Residence program.

Two commissions will lead the building's new era: a sonic sculptural installation by Camille Norment and a metal-based work by Christopher Myers in the Education Workshops. Tickets for the Studio Museum in Harlem can be purchased online and on site. This reopening marks the culmination of an extensive multi-year renovation and expansion effort, aiming to strengthen the museum’s deep connection to the Harlem community and its mission to showcase artists of African descent.

After the seven-year renovation, the reopened Studio Museum in Harlem will offer a dynamic home-and-garden lifestyle, featuring various spaces designed to celebrate and elevate Black art and culture. The museum's weekly Studio Sundays programming and long-term artist residencies with dedicated studio spaces will foster a vibrant community and provide unique lifestyle experiences.
