Nordhorn Transforms Cityscape with Greening Project

The city of Nordhorn has transformed a previously sealed area in front of the Vechte Arkades with a greening project. Four leatherleaf trees were planted last fall, with more such measures planned for suitable inner-city locations in the future.

The project, completed by gardener Hilke Stevens and Michael Kuipers, included planting green holly, flowering shrubs, and ground covers with thorns in two new beds. The location, sunny and hot in the summer, required robust, city climate-resistant plants. In a few years, the leatherleaf trees will help bind fine dust, reduce summer temperatures, and upgrade the cityscape. The new beds also contribute to climate change mitigation and enhancing the city's appearance.

The greening of the area in front of the Vechte Arkades is a permanent measure, with similar projects planned for other suitable inner-city locations. The city's commitment to greening helps improve the urban environment, mitigate climate change, and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
