Notre-Dame's Iconic Statues Return as Spiritual Revival Grows

Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is currently undergoing a significant restoration management phase, with the reinstallation of its iconic statues and a controversial stained-glass window replacement project underway. The cathedral, open to visitors and the faithful, is witnessing a spiritual revival with profound experiences reported.

The restoration of the statues, designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, is nearing completion. Originally planned before the 2019 fire, the project cost $1.64 million and was funded by the Fondation Notre Dame and the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris. The statues, representing the apostles and evangelist symbols, are being lifted as part of the final roof reconstruction phase. They will be returned to their original positions by the end of July, with the spire free of scaffolding and tarps.

The cathedral is currently welcoming around 32,500 to 33,000 visitors per day, with over five million visitors since the beginning of the year. Many visitors report having profound spiritual experiences, contributing to a spiritual awakening within the cathedral. E-ticketing for visiting the towers will start in September, facilitating access for visitors.

A project to replace the non-figurative stained-glass windows with contemporary figurative ones, themed around Pentecost, is underway. Expected to be completed by December 2026, this project remains controversial as the existing windows were not damaged by the fire.

The reinstallation of the statues marks a significant milestone in Notre-Dame Cathedral's restoration journey. The spiritual revival within the cathedral, coupled with the ongoing projects, underscores its enduring appeal and resilience.
