Monday, June 2: Saying Goodbye to Nextbike - Public Funding for Bike Sharing Ends in Berlin
Publicly funded bike-sharing program, Nextbike, to conclude its operations by the end of this month.
Get ready, bike enthusiasts! Nextbike will be bidding farewell to Berlin as publicly funded bike sharing comes to an end in June, following the Senate's decision to not renew the contract with the current provider. There's no talk about seeking a replacement.
Initially, funds for the bike-sharing system were part of Berlin's budget. However, the company was surprised to find that the allocated funds mysteriously vanished from the 2025 plan. Nextbike described the situation as a "deeply negative unique selling point in Europe," as the German capital will soon lose its public urban bike-sharing service.
The Senate attributed the decision to the city's difficult financial situation.
So, will Nextbike vanish from Berlin entirely? Well, it might depend on your location. In the absence of public funds, Nextbike will focus its service on areas where it remains profitable. This means the service will be withdrawn from certain outlying districts, while neighborhoods like Steglitz, Neukölln, Tempelhof, Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Pankow, and Reinickendorf may face a decline in bike availability. Expect prices to rise in these remaining areas.
As of now, Nextbike manages around 6,500 rental bikes across approximately 2,900 stations within and beyond Berlin's S-Bahn ring.
While the company's operations in Berlin will take a significant hit, Nextbike will continue to thrive in areas where it remains financially sound. Keep in mind that Nextbike's operations across 400 cities in 23 countries continue unhindered by this decision.

- In the wake of the Senate's decision, personal-finance management becomes crucial for residents in both central and outlying districts of Berlin, as they may need to adjust their budgeting to accommodate potential increases in bike-renting prices.
- With the end of publicly-funded bike sharing, home-and-garden enthusiasts who enjoy leisurely rides through the city's parks may need to seek alternatives, as Nextbike focuses its services on profitable areas, potentially leaving certain districts with fewer transportation options.
- The withdrawal of Nextbike's service from outlying districts could have a significant impact on the city's lifestyle, particularly for those who rely on bike sharing as part of their daily transportation, such as students and workers in the industry and finance sectors.
- Meanwhile, Nextbike's strong presence in over 400 cities worldwide, including Berlin, emphasizes the importance of diversifying transportation options within individuals' lifestyle choices, highlighting the company's resilience in thriving regions beyond Berlin.
