In the Baden-Württemberg town of Nordheim, two schoolchildren, Marlene (11) and Leo (12), became unlikely heroes when they saved a four-year-old from drowning in a 12.6-foot deep pool.

The incident occurred in mid-August. The young boy, from an African family, had pushed his way to the front of the diving board, jumped into the pool, surfaced briefly, and then sank. No adults were able to react faster than the schoolchildren in the rescue effort.

Marlene and Leo's actions were immediate and decisive when they saw the need for intervention. Leo, diving almost 13 feet deep, used a tow-in technique to reach the boy. Marlene, on the other hand, pressed water out of the boy's stomach at the pool's edge.

The life-saving grip used by the schoolchildren was learned just a week earlier. Leo had practiced the tow-in grip with the DLRG (Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft).

The boy was able to breathe again moments after being rescued. Marlene remembered thinking, "Get the kid to the surface so he can keep living." This moment was particularly poignant for Marlene when a friend pointed out that the boy might not have made it to his next birthday without their intervention.

Mayor Volker Schriek referred to Marlene and Leo as "little heroes and big role models." He believes that many parents should be more aware of their responsibility at the pool's edge. The incident reinforces the importance of lifesaving skills and vigilance around water.

Marlene and Leo are glad that the boy is still alive. They are hailed as heroes in their community, setting an example of courage and quick thinking that will undoubtedly inspire others. The exact location of the pool is in the town of Nordheim, but the news agency reporting the incident, dpa, has chosen to protect the privacy of the young boy by not disclosing his name.
