Pursuing Pastimes in the Golden Years: Discovering Joy and Significance in Later Life through Hobbies

In the heart of Bangladesh, two individuals have found solace and camaraderie in their later years through the pursuit of unique hobbies. Shameem Ara Begum, a 58-year-old woman, and Gazi Shayiful Tarique, a passionate fisherman, have transformed their lives and built a sense of community, all while bringing joy and confidence to their own lives.

Shameem, a mother of two, picked up a paintbrush in her late 30s, after spending years raising her family. Initially, she used unconventional tools like her own hair for a brush and old, dried paints for colors. But her natural talent was soon recognised, as the tutor she hired for just a week to learn the basics of acrylics realised she was a prodigy. Today, Shameem's home is filled with her quiet, humble creations, and painting has become her primary hobby.

One of her most beautiful works, a glass artwork, hangs proudly in her living room. Shameem also has a deep need to preserve the beauty she sees, and has painted over rocks and arranged them on an old tray. Her plants, which she considers like her own children, are housed in unique, modern pots that she makes herself.

Gazi Shayiful Tarique, on the other hand, started fishing at a young age in his hometown Kushtia. His passion for fishing has led him to various bodies of water, including the Bay of Bengal, Thai lakes, and Maldives waters. Tarique is part of a group called 'Feathers and Fins', who share a love for fishing and companionship. The group, known as the "Feathers and Fins" group, is a source of peace and a way for Tarique to disconnect from work and life's noise.

Arthy Ahmed, the owner of the Arthy Ahmed Dance Academy, promotes a healthy environment for people of all ages to pursue dance as a hobby. She encourages people to overcome limiting beliefs and carve out time for themselves to try new hobbies within their comfort zone. Hobbies, it seems, can stimulate different parts of the brain and improve brain health, especially those that involve movement and social interaction.

For Shameem and Tarique, their hobbies have brought them not only personal fulfilment but also a sense of community. Their stories serve as a reminder that it's never too late to discover new passions and build connections with others.
