Rally in Support of Secure School Journeys for Kids
In the heart of Bergisch Gladbach, the former Zanders paper factory site (An der Gohrsmühle) will once again become a hub of activity as the local group Kidical Mass Bergisch Gladbach organises a child-friendly bike demo on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 2 PM.
The Kidical Mass event is a vibrant children's bike demonstration that aims to promote safe walking and cycling paths, advocating for a bike- and kid-friendly traffic design. The route takes participants on a colourful journey through the city centre, ensuring a fun and engaging experience for all involved.
One of the organisers, Melanie Baierl, emphasises the importance of every child in Bergisch Gladbach being able to come to school safely and independently. To this end, Kidical Mass Bergisch Gladbach has been advocating for better protection of children and youth in traffic for many years.
The event is not just a one-off initiative. Kidical Mass Bergisch Gladbach is also involved in other projects aimed at improving traffic conditions for children, such as the ongoing traffic trial for "school streets" at the Grundschule In der Auen in Refrath. The Schwerfelstraße has been transformed into a school street during school pick-up and drop-off times, enhancing safety for the schoolchildren.
The ADFC Rhein-Berg supports the Kidical Mass event and will be distributing balloons and children's warning vests at the start. The police will also accompany the event, ensuring the safety of all participants and securing the entire route.
As a special treat, a prize wheel will be set up at the end of the Kidical Mass event. Children can win prizes that increase safety on their bikes, making the event even more appealing for young participants.
The Kidical Mass event is not the only exciting event happening on September 21, 2025. The "Harvest Festival of Sustainability by the Food Council Bergisches Land" will also take place, offering a chance for the community to come together and celebrate sustainability.
