Rare Italian Harry Potter First Edition Surfaces With Full 'Joanne' Name

A rare Italian first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has surfaced. This copy, published by Salani in May 1998, is unique due to its dust jacket bearing the author's full name, Joanne, which was initially advised against by Bloomsbury.

The book's original dust jacket is a rarity as it displays the author's full name, Joanne, both front and back. This is unusual as the English publisher, Bloomsbury, had advised J.K. Rowling to use only her initials for the novel's release.

The specific recipient and the exact date of the book's first reception remain unknown, though it was gifted to its current owner on April 20, 1999, by their school. This was part of the 8th edition of 'A book for the head', a school event.

A catalog from Pontremoli's bookstore also features this first Italian edition from May 1998.

The discovery of this rare Italian first edition, with its distinctive dust jacket, offers a glimpse into the early marketing of the Harry Potter series. It serves as a reminder of the initial advice given to J.K. Rowling regarding her pen name.
