Recycling Efforts Lead to Innovative Products: Transforming Cigarette Butts into Eyeglass Frames

In the picturesque town of Ariano Irpino, Italy, the "G. De Gruttola" Institute is playing a pivotal role in the monitoring of an intriguing project: the production of eyeglass frames from cigarette butts. This groundbreaking initiative is spearheaded by Essequadro, a local company with over half a century of experience in the eyewear sector.

Essequadro has partnered with the Institute for Composite and Biomaterials (Ipcb) of the National Research Council (Cnr) to develop a project focused on the extraction of acetate from cigarette butts for the production of eyeglass frames. The 2023-2024 school year marks the start of this exciting venture, aptly named the "Oscar" cigarette butt eyeglasses project.

The idea for the project was born during a business trip when the owner of Essequadro read an article discussing the possibility of extracting acetate from cigarette butts. Intrigued, the financial manager of Essequadro, Simone Sorrentino, played a significant role in the project's conception.

The process involves cleaning and sanitising the cigarette butts, then isolating the cellulose acetate component. After purification, the cellulose acetate is reprocessed—usually through melting or dissolving and reforming—to create new raw materials for manufacturing durable, eco-friendly eyeglass frames.

This innovative reuse not only diverts cigarette waste from the environment but also reduces reliance on virgin plastic materials for eyewear production by recycling the cellulose acetate inherent in cigarette filters. The cigarette butt project is a demonstration of Essequadro's commitment to sustainability and innovation.

It is important to note that the extraction of cellulose acetate from cigarette butts is a novel approach to producing eyeglass frames. The cellulose acetate fibers inside the filter of cigarettes fragment under thermal and mechanical stress, producing non-biodegradable microplastics. By recycling these materials, the project aims to combat the environmental impact of cigarette waste.

Essequadro produces eyeglasses both for third parties and for their own brand in an artisanal but state-of-the-art way. The cigarette butt eyeglasses project is a continuation of Essequadro's efforts to transform waste into resources. The "Oscar" cigarette butt eyeglasses project, monitored by the Smoking Glasses team of the "G. De Gruttola" Institute, is a significant step forward in this mission.

The cigarette butt project has been patented by Essequadro, and it is part of a larger effort to transform waste into resources. This initiative is set to make a meaningful impact on the environment and the eyewear industry, demonstrating that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand.
