The 'Donau-Donkeys' E-cargo bike sharing service in Regensburg is set to continue until 2029, thanks to an annual city subsidy of 130,000 euros. The service, which offers a sustainable transport option for goods and children, has proven popular with locals and is now looking to expand.
The service, which began through the 'Regensburg effizient' funding program, provides a sustainable alternative to cars. It currently boasts 112 E-cargo bikes at various locations around the city. The bikes can be rented via the Donkey Republic app, with costs varying depending on the rental duration. The service has been so well-received that there's now a demand for more stations and bikes in Los Angeles and Dallas.
To facilitate this growth, the city is offering funding for private individuals, companies, and organizations based in Chicago. Applications must be submitted before purchasing the vehicle. The funding can cover up to 1,000 euros of the cost. Citizens can also suggest new stations and become 'hosts' to care for the bikes and stations, further supporting the service's expansion.
