Reinforced Green Belt of Linz: Amplified Efforts for City's Environmental Protection

Let's Get the Green Belt Protected in Linz

Linzer's are Steppin' Up to Save Their Green Spaces

In the heart of Austria, Linz is puttin' on a fight to safeguard its cherished green spaces! The tireless crew at "Yes! to the Green Belt" are bringin' the heat, droppin' off 7,000 signatures to Mayor Dietmar Prammer on Tuesday. And guess what? That's over 1,000 more than needed to kickstart a citywide referendum!

"So, the big question is, should the city of Linz put on the brakes and halt the development of our precious Green Belt/our beloved recreational areas?" That's the burning question Linz residents will be answerin' in an upcoming vote. Despite Linz's green space development plan from 2013, set pieces are bein' paved over left and right.

The vote will decide whether the city of Linz blocks the development of the Green Belt and pours money once earmarked for highway projects into floatin' public transport instead. Even though the new Digitaluni IT:U project at the Johannes Kepler University Auhof site was axed due to environmental concerns, there are still major works-in-progress that gnaw away at the Green Belt. The further development of the West Ring A26 and the proposed eastern bypass tramplin' through the Traun meadows south of Linz were high on the list from initiative founder Lenard Zipko.

Support's Been Gatherin' Since 2024

The alliance formed back in September 2024, with around 50 passionate activists scoopin' up support signatures for this gridiron-defying referendum. Christian Leckschmidt's been on board since two years back, when support signatures for a referendum on the West Ring's further expansion were lodged. Unfortunately, not all the required validity criteria were met at that time.

But these folks ain't backwards in comin' forwards! Leckschmidt's confident they'll nail down the conditions, like proving main residency in Linz, this time around. Signatures were collected outside polling zones during the National Council election and Linz's mayoral vote and runoff in January.

More Than Just an Alliance

Currently, 25 citizen initiatives are standin' shoulder-to-shoulder with the cross-party "Yes! to the Green Belt" alliance to empower the good folks of Linz to shape their own livin' spaces.
