Restored Seth Thomas #2 Regulator Clock Keeps Excellent Time
A Seth Thomas #2 Regulator clock, purchased in the fall of 2018, has been meticulously restored, resulting in one of the most accurate mechanical clocks in its owner's collection. The clock's intricate workings and classic design have been brought back to life, thanks to a careful replacement of the suspension spring and a thorough re-installation process.
The clock, with its attractive mahogany finish, is a testament to the quality craftsmanship of Seth Thomas' regulators. The Regulator #2 model, dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, is recognised as a classic example of the brand's expertise in regulator clocks.
The suspension spring, a crucial component in pendulum clocks, was replaced with a new one sourced from Canadian supplier Perrins. This thin, flexible band of steel supports the pendulum, allowing it to swing freely and regulate time accurately. The new suspension spring has been carefully installed, ensuring that the pendulum swings with slightly more amplitude than before.
Replacing the suspension spring required several steps, including removing the cast iron mounting bracket, reaming the hole, and sometimes using a tapered brass pin instead of the old pin. The re-installation process also involved attaching the pendulum to the end of the horizontal pins of the suspension spring and ensuring that the crutch wire goes through the opening in the pendulum.
One important aspect of the re-installation process was ensuring that the hour hand was pushed in far enough to avoid rubbing against the minute hand and stopping the clock. If the second's hand is not pushed in far enough, there is a risk of interference that could also stop the clock.
The clock's movement was carefully removed before the suspension spring was replaced, a process that involved removing the hands, face, and wood crossbar, as well as unscrewing four posts on the front of the movement. The lower section of the case was redesigned in 1922, allowing the clock to be dated between 1922 and 1929.
The restored clock is currently running well, with the pendulum swinging smoothly and the clock keeping excellent time. The clock has been leveled on the wall, and the action of the pendulum has been observed to ensure that it continues to run accurately. The clock will be scheduled for a full servicing in the next month to maintain its precision and longevity.
