Return of the Festival of Contemporary Butter in Castelli Romani

The picturesque region of Lazio is set to host the 8th edition of the "Festa del Buttero Contemporaneo" on September 27th and 28th, 2023, at the Parco dei Castelli Romani. This annual event promises a captivating blend of equestrian shows, cultural traditions, and a focus on biodiversity, social inclusion, and sustainable tourism.

The event will feature performances by various groups, including the Buttero Contemporaneo from Castelli Romani, the Cavalieri di Maremma from Alto Lazio, Cuor di Maremma with Federico Forci from Maremma Toscana, and Manuele Baffetti from Maremma Alto Lazio. These groups are renowned for their mastery of equestrian arts, keeping alive the centuries-old traditions that date back to Etruscan and medieval times.

The "Buttero Contemporaneo" project aims to build inclusive and resilient communities, and this year's event is no exception. It serves as a cultural container for equestrian and rural traditions, offering visitors an immersive experience into Lazio's rich heritage.

In addition to the equestrian shows, the event will feature equestrian theater, transhumance, and a variety of stalls showcasing crafts, typical products, and the Buttero Museum. The Mercato della Terra Regionale di Slow Food Lazio will offer a tantalising array of regional products and culinary proposals, prepared in collaboration with Ass.ne Slow Food Frascati e Terre Tuscolane, Slow Food Latina, and the section of Velletri-Genzano.

Lazio, with its unique biodiversity, particularly in equine biodiversity, which is the largest in Europe, provides a fitting backdrop for this celebration. The region's most iconic figures, the Butteri, or horse herders, are a national treasure and a symbol of Lazio's equestrian heritage.

Admission to the event is free, making it accessible to all. A historical fact that adds to the event's allure is the story of Augusto Imperiali, a well-known buttero from Cisterna Latina, who "defeated" Buffalo Bill, the famous cowboy, during his stay in the Pontine area in 1890.

The "Festa del Buttero Contemporaneo" is organised with the contribution of the Regione Lazio, the patronage of the Comune di Velletri, and the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani. This collaboration ensures a well-planned and engaging event that showcases the best of Lazio's equestrian art and promotes the region. Join us in September for a celebration of tradition, culture, and the beauty of Lazio.
