Reviving Lesbian Spaces in Hackney: A Rebirth of London's Past
Revamped Article:
As a queerspawn hailing from Hackney, I've been privy to a lifetime spent in lesbian haunts. It's a bummer to know that over 60% of London's LGBTQ+ establishments, havens that are crucial to the FLINTA* community and integral to London's cultural tapestry, have shut down between 2006 and 2022. This unfortunate trend reduced the once-bustling 125 venues to a mere 50, with lesbian spaces taking the brunt of the hit.
Embracing Change: A Glimpse into La Camionera
Responding to a growing demand, the east London venue La Camionera has proven to be a game-changer. Named after the Spanish slang for butch lesbians, this vibrant spot takes a soft-spoken approach to cultivating a new brand of FLINTA* space, with a touch of Mediterranean charm. Describing it as a heartfelt missive to the lesbian community, co-owner Clodagh Farrelly explains.
Born from humble beginnings, La Camioneria originated as a one-night pop-up for 40 guests on Broadway Market in February 2024. It quickly transformed into a small phenomenon, with hundreds spilling onto the streets in droves, affirming this is exactly what the city needed. 'We didn't see it, so we had to make it ourselves, and people got behind us,' adds Farrelly.
From the outset, the bar was designed to accommodate a transient rhythm, not reliant on alcohol culture but centered around meaningful discourse, strong friendships, and camaraderie. Steering clear of the very British binaries of 'pubbing' or 'clubbing,' La Camioneria offers a fresh, welcoming alternative. During the day, the bar is light and airy, while by night, the space takes on a more sensual tone, often hosting speed-dating events, author readings, and life-drawing sessions. Co-owner Clara Solis notes, 'We were inspired by traditional Spanish café culture, a space that wasn't essentially just "nightlife" in a one-dimensional sense.'
Ensuring an understated presence on the street, Solis comments, 'The metal facade is quite subtle, it invites you rather than confronting you head-on.' Upon entering, flower arrangements by Croco Studio welcome the eye. Organic and modern aesthetics blend seamlessly as rough plaster walls exposed during demolition contrast with the sleek, brushed aluminum bar and powder blue flooring. Hand-painted tiles adorn both the exterior facade and interior entrance, inspired by Portuguese Azulejos and the mythological tales depicted in Picasso's Minotor paintings—a nod to the 'bulldyke' term.
Working with a modest budget, a successful £100,000 crowdfunding campaign following the pop-up's success allowed designers and builders Studio Popelo and StudioWet to adopt an ethos of ad-hocism. 'We aimed to integrate what we could from the history of this space,' says Farrelly. While most furniture was sourced second-hand, a scrapped and weathered timber door, once used as a cutting mat during construction, has been transformed into an elegant sliding door leading into the staff room, its wear-and-tear story preserved.
Community-driven and deeply personal, La Camioneria embodies a bold statement of tenderness. Dancing between Lesbian bars' rich history—from the 1970s' Brixton shebeens to the iconic 1980s Gateways club in Chelsea—this Spanish café concept infused with a modern twist on London nightlife stands as a testament to the power of community support, grassroots spirit, and elegant design.
La Camionera is nestled in 243 Well St, London E9 6RG, United Kingdom.**
