Roof restoration at the Central Cemetery initiates, as per Lichtenberg's announcement.
The renovation of the central hall at the Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde in Lichtenberg, Berlin, is set to commence in June, as announced by the Lichtenberg District Office. The initial phase comprises scaffolding work, sealing the roof, and reinforcing the roof truss, with approximately €35,000 allocated for the project.
Over the years, the building has suffered extensive damage due to a leaking roof, with repeated repairs ineffective in preventing subsequent deterioration, such as crumbling plaster.
In light of the roof renovation, the building aims to maintain its architectural value and provide an appealing environment for future funerals. District Councilor Filiz Kekuelluoglu (Greens) and Camilla Schuler (Left), the district councilor for urban development, shared their thoughts on the significance of the restoration.
"The funeral hall of the Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde is not just an important site for funerals but also an architecturally valuable building that we wish to preserve for future generations," stated Kekuelluoglu.
Schuler added, "The building's preservation is crucial to maintaining its status as an aesthetically pleasing location for future funeral services."
Construction work is anticipated to be completed by early August, with a five-meter-long tunnel being installed at the main entrance to shield mourners from the ongoing renovation.
