Iberdrola's East Anglia 3 Offshore Wind Farm Takes Shape

Spain's significant investment of nearly 5000 million euros in clean energy projects in the UK is bearing fruit, with the construction of the largest offshore wind farm, named East Anglia 3, by Iberdrola. This project, valued at approximately 4700 million euros, is a testament to the growing focus on the sea as an inexhaustible source of clean energy.

The East Anglia 3 project, a key component of a larger effort to outshine polluting fossil fuels, has reached a significant milestone with the laying of the first section of the export cable. The electricity produced at sea by the East Anglia 3 project will be carried 147 kilometers to the coast, and after reaching the shore, it will travel another 37 kilometers on land to the HVDC conversion station in Bramford, near Ipswich.

The capacity of the East Anglia 3 project is 1.4 gigawatts (GW), making it one of the largest offshore wind farms globally. Once operational, it will supply more than a million homes with clean energy. The partners of the Iberdrola East Anglia 3 project, supported by the United Kingdom and with an investment exceeding 5 billion euros, are Iberdrola, ScottishPower Renewables, and Siemens Gamesa.

In a strategic move, Iberdrola and Masdar will each have a 50% stake in the East Anglia 3 asset. This agreement, signed at the UN climate conference COP28 in December 2023, aims to create clean energy projects in key locations such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the goal of tripling renewable capacity by 2030.

The first section of the export cable for the East Anglia 3 project was transported to land in Bawdsey, Suffolk. The existing infrastructure of East Anglia 1 will be used to transport the energy from East Anglia 3 to the HVDC conversion station in Bramford.

The UK has expressed a desire to 'travel back in time' to the year 2050, a vision that projects like East Anglia 3 are helping to realise. The strategic alliance between Iberdrola and Masdar is not just a significant investment in the offshore wind energy sector, but a step towards a cleaner, greener future.
