## A Fresh Start for Düsseldorf's Altar Servers: The Renovated Sacristy at Bürgerstiftung Gerricus

The Bürgerstiftung Gerricus in Düsseldorf, a community foundation dedicated to supporting local cultural, religious, and social projects, has unveiled the renovated sacristy, a significant functional room within the church. This revitalised space offers a brighter and more welcoming environment for altar servers, who have faced challenges during the pandemic.

### A Space Fit for the Future

The sacristy, with its rich history dating back several decades, underwent a thoughtful renovation to meet modern needs while preserving its historical integrity. The project, which cost approximately €45,000 to €60,000, included structural repairs, electrical system upgrades, new cabinetry, improved lighting, and aesthetic enhancements.

The funds for the renovation were raised through donations from the community, including parish members and local businesses. The project was overseen by Klaus Maaßen, who handled the lighting and coordination.

### A Haven for Altar Servers

The renovation has significantly improved the daily experience for altar servers who use the sacristy. The new layout, storage solutions, and lighting make it easier for them to prepare for services, while the warm and friendly atmosphere encourages a sense of community.

The built-in cabinets, featuring bright wooden doors, provide ample space for cassocks and other liturgical items. The renovated space has also fostered a greater sense of pride and responsibility, inspiring more young people to participate actively in church services.

### Adapting to a Changing World

The pandemic has presented unique challenges for altar servers, with the postponement of the introduction of the former communion children of 2020 and several altar servers having to wait since summer for their introduction. Despite these setbacks, the leaders of the altar servers have remained proactive, organising Friday meetings online to maintain cohesion.

The more than 30 active altar servers have found it more difficult during these times, but they are resilient. Schmitz, the Kaplan of the church, is grateful for their dedication and appreciates the exchange of ideas and reaching out during these difficult times.

### A Bright Future Ahead

As the leaders who are going to university prepare to say their goodbyes on January 6 (provided Corona conditions allow), the new leaders, the older altar servers, are already ready to take over, according to Schmitz. The sacristy renovation marks a fresh start for the altar servers and the church community, providing a modern and inviting space for them to gather and serve.

The joint annual trip, usually a cherished tradition, did not take place due to Corona, but the action day, which typically occurs once a quarter, has been cancelled several times. Despite these cancellations, the spirit of the altar servers remains strong, and they continue to find ways to connect and support one another.

Schmitz is glad that young people are finding their way to the church today, and the renovated sacristy serves as a testament to this ongoing commitment and engagement.

The interior-design renovation of the sacristy, complete with new cabinetry, improved lighting, and aesthetic enhancements, has transformed the space into a lifestyle haven for the altar servers. This home-and-garden-inspired makeover fosters a warm and friendly atmosphere that encourages community among the altar servers.
