Student Being Taught Proper Segregation of Trash in Second Grade

In an innovative move to educate children about waste management, the city administration has launched the "Breakfast with the Waste Monster" project. This initiative is aimed at six classes in three elementary schools this year, including Havelse, Frielingen, and James Krüss.

The project commences with a breakfast featuring numerous packaged foods, followed by a hands-on waste sorting session. The goal is to teach students the importance of waste separation, recycling, and waste reduction, making learning about waste management not only visible but also exciting.

Mayor Claudio Provenzano emphasised the importance of the project, stating that it is crucial to sensitise the youngest to sustainable resource management. He believes that by starting early, we can instil a lifelong commitment to environmental responsibility in our children.

During the sessions, Environmental Officer Diestel and her colleague Eric Bindhak demonstrate various waste types often overlooked in daily life, such as batteries, bulky waste, and garden waste. To aid in the sorting process, the Waste Monster, equipped with four arms, helps students categorise the waste correctly into four main categories: paper/paperboard, packaging, organic, and residual waste.

The Waste Monster, with its friendly and interactive design, adds an element of fun to the learning experience, making it an effective tool for teaching children about waste management. The names of the other two elementary schools where the "Breakfast with the Waste Monster" project is being implemented this year are not publicly available.

In conclusion, the "Breakfast with the Waste Monster" project is an exciting initiative that aims to teach children about the importance of waste management in a fun and engaging way. By starting early and making learning about waste management exciting, we hope to instil a lifelong commitment to environmental responsibility in our children.
