Terrifying Invasion by Slugs from Spain Leaves Residents of Limbaži Astonished

In the quaint town of Limbaži, Latvia, an unusual fight has become almost an everyday occurrence - the battle against the rapidly expanding Spanish slugs (Arion vulgaris). The open-air stage, a symbol of local culture, has unfortunately become one of the hotspots for these invasive creatures.

Recently, a community event known as the Limbaži slugathon brought together people of all ages to join forces in the battle against the slugs. During this event, volunteers discovered some peculiarities about Spanish slug biology and learned that dumping full buckets of Spanish slugs into a container surrounded by salt does not prevent their reappearance.

One of the environmental technicians leading the fight against the Spanish slugs is Inese Ozola. Another volunteer, Inta, shared that she fights Spanish slugs in her garden using various methods such as salt, salt water, poison, and baits. Zinta, another participant, admitted to being surprised by the difficulty of picking up Spanish slugs like potatoes.

The slugathon provided an opportunity for volunteers to exchange tips and learn new tactics and facts about Spanish slugs. Participants were informed that Spanish slugs are most active at night, and effective extermination methods were shared. Despite the efforts, the debate in Latvia continues about the best way to combat Spanish slugs or if they are invincible.

Ugis, a resident of the Limbaži municipality, also admitted to being surprised by the large number of Spanish slugs in the town. Latvian Television reported that, at the end of the slugathon, sounds could still be heard of Spanish slugs trying to escape from their salt prison.

Manual collection remains the current method against Spanish slugs in Limbaži. Everyone participating in the slugathon was given a bucket and a pair of gloves to aid in the collection efforts. Artificial Intelligence, it seems, is currently worse than useless when it comes to manually collecting Spanish slugs.

One concerning fact that emerged during the slugathon is that Spanish slugs can carry diseases and parasites. However, no new fact about Spanish slugs carrying diseases or parasites was mentioned in this paragraph.

The slugathon not only served as a battle against the invasive species but also as a platform for volunteers to learn and share information about Spanish slugs and their behaviour. The event was a testament to the community's resilience and their determination to protect their town from these unwelcome guests.
