Gardeners in Zuchering may not typically welcome field mice, yet the scenario seems different here. Instead of discouragement, the arrival of these small creatures seems to hold some charm.

In the picturesque town of Zuchering, a unique project is underway, led by the local Fruit and Vegetable Growing Association. This initiative, focused on promoting sustainable and wildlife-friendly agricultural practices, has transformed an ordinary orchard into a vibrant hub of community engagement, ecological awareness, and local food production.

The heart of the project lies in its wildlife-friendly features. Native species are being planted, natural habitats are being maintained, and environmentally sensitive cultivation techniques are being employed to benefit local wildlife. One of the most notable additions to the orchard is the wild bee hotel, painstakingly created with hours of detailed work by Sigrid Rausch, Irina Kuttenreich, and Maria Schmidl-Kunz. This structure, hoped to attract a multitude of insects, now stands proudly among the fruit trees.

The orchard also serves as the kindergarten group's outdoor classroom. After sweaty but successful mowing and the removal of old garden waste, the kindergarten group's seating area was created. Surrounded by pruned shrubs, this beautiful space invites children to learn and play in harmony with nature.

Visitors are welcome to partake in the bounty of the orchard. Berry bushes have been planted for self-service collection, allowing people to take a household amount of fruit and berries. The orchard is also home to structures and building materials from the busy voles, a testament to the diverse ecosystem thriving within its boundaries.

The project's future plans include the addition of a beetle cellar and a pile of stones for lizards. The association encourages community involvement and invites donations of berry bushes or participation in future activities. For more information, contact [email protected].

The Zuchering project is a shining example of how agriculture can be both productive and supportive of nature. By fostering a closer connection between the community and local food production, it encourages a more sustainable, ecologically aware future.

In this project, a home-and-garden focus is being integrated with the creation of a bee hotel for wild bees, adding to the wildlife-friendly features within the orchard. The kindergarten group is also benefiting from the project, using the pruned shrubs and seating area as an outdoor classroom to learn and grow closer to nature.
