Yakutsk, the coldest city in Russia, is taking steps to improve its urban greenery. City head Yevgeny Grigoryev and advisor Ekaterina Pavlov recently inspected an automatic irrigation system in the city, signalling a new phase in Yakutsk's greening efforts.

The focus of these efforts is Victory Square, where a classic park lawn will soon be sown, accompanied by the planting of 33 larch trees. Fifteen of these trees will be blue larches, a rare and beautiful species native to Siberia, while the remaining 18 will be regular Siberian larches. The larch trees will be planted along Khabarov Street.

The process of planting and maintaining the lawn and larch trees in Victory Square is complex. The city administration is aiming to strike a balance between volunteer work and professional methods to achieve their goal of greening the city. In the case of Victory Square, a contractor will be hired to handle the planting and maintenance this year.

The maintenance process will include fertilization, mowing, and watering, made possible by the automatic irrigation system. This system is designed to ensure the survival and thriving of the larch trees and the lawn, despite the challenging weather conditions in Yakutsk.

In a bid to extend these greening initiatives to other public spaces, the Gubinsky District Administration in Yakutsk plans to install automatic irrigation systems in all public spaces in the city. Yevgeny Grigoryev, the city head, has stated that the ultimate goal is to green the city through both volunteer work and professional methods.

Advisor Ekaterina Pavlov emphasised the importance of professional organisations handling the lawn maintenance to ensure a well-maintained and beautiful Victory Square for the 80th anniversary of the Victory, which is fast approaching. The automatic irrigation system is set to launch soon, marking a significant step forward in Yakutsk's commitment to sustainable urban greenery.
