Tree Guardians Endure Summer's Scorching Heat
In the city of Kaarst, the local administration and the Greens party are calling for citizens to take an active role in preserving the city's greenery, particularly young trees that are currently under stress due to the ongoing drought.
According to Nina Lennhof, the Greens' spokeswoman for environmental policy, trees play a crucial role in Kaarst's climate, providing shade during hot summers, lowering temperatures, and preventing the formation of 'heat islands.' Katrin Lukowitz, another party spokeswoman, also emphasized the importance of trees in holding water in the soil and cooling the air.
Despite recent rainfall and summer thunderstorms, the soil in Kaarst is not sufficiently moist to prevent drought damage in the Vorster Forest and on street trees. Young trees, in particular, are struggling, and filling a watering bag with one to two cans of water can significantly help them, as explained by Jerome Busch from the municipal press office.
To facilitate this effort, the city is providing watering bags to citizens who take on tree sponsorship in Kaarst. These bags, which have a capacity of up to 85 liters, can water a tree for up to eight hours. Citizens who become tree sponsors can contribute to healthy greenery and a better climate in the city of Kaarst.
The watering bags are intended for young trees aged one to 15 years. Rolf Retzlaff, who has spoken about the importance of citizen involvement, stated that this involvement can be motivating. The Greens and the city administration are hoping for a significant response from citizens in maintaining healthy greenery and a better climate in Kaarst.
In addition to citizen participation, the municipal building maintenance department will provide trees suffering from heat with fresh water using special watering carts during upcoming heat periods. The city is also planting tree species that can withstand longer periods without much water and high sunlight.
To apply for tree sponsorship and access further information, citizens can visit a specific URL or scan a QR code. The city's tree stock, which represents a natural value and serves as a recreational area and retreat for both humans and animals, is immensely important for the city of Kaarst, as explained by Jerome Busch.
In these challenging times, the Kaarst Greens are encouraging citizens to help water young trees over the summer. By doing so, they can play a part in ensuring that the city's greenery remains vibrant and healthy, contributing to a better climate for all.
