Two baboons depart from Gotha Zoo, heading for North Saxony.
In a substantial and emotionally charged move, Gotha Zoo sent its long-standing green mandrills to Delitzsch Zoo, located near Leipzig, on Friday. The transfer forms part of a regional endeavor to upgrade animal living conditions and promote species-specific group housing, as announced by Gotha's rich cultural city.
The mandrills will now find a new home in Delitzsch where they can mix with a larger social circle of their own kind and inhabit more generously sized, species-specific enclosures. "Although it's painful to bid farewell, the animals' welfare remains our top priority," Angelika Wimmer, Gotha Zoo's director, emphasizes. "In Delitzsch, the mandrills can live in a larger social structure - essential for these highly social creatures and much more aligned with their natural behavior."
Gotha Zoo is content that their actions contribute positively to animal welfare and species-appropriate husbandry. All ardent supporters of the mandrills are warmly invited to visit them in Delitzsch, where they can observe the animals in a stimulating environment.
This transfer could significantly benefit the mandrills by improving their living conditions, providing more opportunities for socialization, contributing to breeding programs for genetic diversity, supporting broader conservation efforts, enhancing their diets, and increasing public awareness about the species. The move aims to create the most favorable environment for the mandrills' well-being and long-term conservation.
The mandrills' relocation to Delitzsch home-and-garden provides them with a stimulating environment, promoting both their social lifestyle and species-specific living conditions. This lifestyle change aims to ensue the mandrills' well-being and long-term conservation, while allowing their supporters to continue observing them closely.
