Texas Longhorns Positioned for Success in New Era of College Football
The University of Texas, situated in the heart of Texas' abundant football talent, is poised to make a significant impact in the new era of college football. The Longhorns have a storied past, having won many conference championships and four national titles, the most recent in 2006. Texas' football program is a magnet for top high school talent, with the January 2025 On3 Magazine ranking of the top 300 high school football players in America including 42 players from Texas. Notable players from the state who have committed to the Longhorns include Keelon Russell (Alabama signee), Dakorien Moore (Oregon), Lance Jackson (Texas), Michael Fasusi (Oklahoma), and Jonah Wiliams (Texas).
The Dallas-Fort Worth area, Houston, and parts of west Texas are particularly rich sources of football talent, with Texas having eight of the 32 five-stars in the final On300 ranking and a total of 18 top-100 prospects. In this new era of college football with few rules, the University of Texas is positioning itself to be a major winner by keeping more of the best talent in Texas at home and reaching across the country to recruit five-star talent like linebacker Tyler Atkinson from Georgia.
However, the Longhorns are not yet on par with powerhouses like Ohio State, who won titles in 2014 and 2024, or Alabama, who have titles in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, and 2021. Despite several seasons of mediocrity since their last national championship, the Longhorns are determined to return to the top.
Since the 2022 season, the head coach of the Texas Longhorns has been Steve Sarkisian. Under his leadership, the Longhorns' 2025 recruiting class is ranked consensus #1 in the country, setting the stage for a promising future.
