Upcoming Spectacle: Once, the Musical at Cerritos Center for Performing Arts
The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) kicks off the 2019-2020 Broadway Performance Partner Series with a captivating production of "ONCE, The Musical". This award-winning musical, which won eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, will play at the CCPA from October 11-27, 2019.
The unique configuration of the play's stage is in the middle of the CCPA's main floor, a setup not used in 18 years. This in-the-round setup provides a distinctive viewing experience for the audience, making "ONCE, The Musical" a must-see production.
Stephen Gifford's set design, Andrew Nagy's projection design, Alexandra Johnson's costume coordination, Cricket Myers' sound design, and David Lamoureux's musical direction and conducting contribute to the immersive atmosphere of the production. Jim Mora serves as the technical director, Donna Parsons is the production stage manager, and Terry Hanrahan is the assistant stage manager. Caitlin Muelder is the dialect coach for the production.
3-D Theatricals launched its 2019-2020 season with "ONCE, The Musical", a production that made its hilarious West Coast debut at the CCPA. The story revolves around a heartbroken Irish guitarist (Tom Frank) who is inspired by an immigrant girl (Aurora Florence) to keep going, leading to a powerful but complicated love story.
The main cast includes Katharine McPhee as Jenna, who previously played the role on Broadway, and Jack McBrayer as Ogie. Later during the run, Lucie Jones took over the role of Jenna starting June 17, 2019. Desi Oakley, formerly Jenna on the US tour, also joined the London production in January 2020. Sara Bareilles and Gavin Creel reprised their roles in the London production from January 28, 2020, until the end of the run. Other stars in the production include Chuck McLane, Katherine Washington, Cynthia Marty, Scott Waara, Andy Taylor, David Coe Lamoureux, Andrew Huber, Cameron Tagge, Erich Schroeder, Leota Rhodes, and Quinn Copeland.
Part of the cast plays music on stage 20 minutes before the play starts, with a seamless transition to the start of the play. "ONCE, The Musical" is adapted from the Academy Award-winning motion picture, written and directed by John Carney. The production is directed by Kari Hayter and choreographed by Linda Love Simmons.
