Vegetated Paths Spreading Through Gronau

In the heart of Gronau, a dream is taking shape to reinvigorate the neglected Strunde area. Michael Wittassek, an advocate from ForumGronau, envisions clearing the thicket, creating paths, and reopening access to this green expanse. This initiative, along with ForumGronau members Inge Andersch and Doro Corts, aims to transform these spaces into places of encounter.

The wildflower meadow, once a haven for insects, was sadly mowed down, but there's a growing movement to breathe new life into Gronau's green spaces. One such activist, whose name remains undisclosed, has presented proposals for improving green spaces and public paths in Gronau, participating in the Green Walk in recent years.

The future Strunde Park is slated for a redesign and transformation into an attractive city park. The green parcel, currently owned by the company "Roplasto" and seemingly unused, presents a prime opportunity for this transformation.

Gronau boasts a green area along the Strunde, with partly rural structures and neighbouring forests such as the Thielenbruch Forest, Gierather Forest, and the Schluchter Heath. The Lindenhof, one of the last traditional inns in the area, still retains its beer garden under the old linden trees.

The district of Gronau, with its potential for transformation, could become a haven of attractive green oases. The municipal building yard is a testament to this, with plans to install ten new benches to improve the quality of stay in the neighbourhood and create small green oases.

The path from Mülheimer Street to Dünnhofsweg is a frequently used shortcut, but lacks shade. Halfway along this path, a large empty paved area is found, with lush wildflowers on the other side. This barren space is proposed for open-air events, with folding chairs or picnic tables.

The roundabout corner Rodemich/Rodenbach features a small green corner with a bench under an old maple tree, but is rarely used. The square in front of St. Marien Church, with a single tree and two overgrown beds next to the bike rack, could be transformed into blooming flower beds.

The Schluchter Heath, a forested area between Cologne-Dellbrück, Gronau, and Refrath, showcases the principle of a "garden city" in the garden-like district of Straße Schluchterheide, located in western Gronau.

In an effort to engage the community, attempts have been made to liven up these green spaces with literature readings and a book exchange. The city has agreed to put up a second bench and create a flower bed in this space, further encouraging community interaction.

Moreover, a circus wagon on wheels could be set up temporarily in this space, adding a touch of whimsy and fun. The revitalisation of these green spaces is not just about creating attractive gathering spots, but also about fostering a sense of community and shared enjoyment of Gronau's natural beauty.
