Week of Purple Transitioning to Green Remarks Triumph!
In the heart of Worcester, Massachusetts, the College of the Holy Cross recently concluded its annual Purple Goes Green week, an event dedicated to environmental sustainability sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA). This week-long celebration, filled with various programs and activities, aimed to inform students about environmental practices and foster a sense of community around sustainability.
Anna Lee '24, Opinions Editor for the college newspaper, penned an article discussing the Office of Sustainability's progress during Purple Goes Green week. The Director of Sustainability, Cathy Liebowitz, who was appointed in April 2020, is working tirelessly to improve sustainability on campus and achieve carbon-neutrality by 2040, as Holy Cross, a Jesuit school, aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by this date.
The week began with an informational discussion and giveaway by the Office of Sustainability, followed by a movie screening and an SGA pub night with environmental trivia. Thursday saw a Hogan lobby table offering baked goods in exchange for students' sustainability plans, a tour of a tiny home made of repurposed dumpster material, and a Disc Golf event with the Outdoors club.
Friday concluded with Pies for the Planet, a Table Talk Fundraiser for the Catholic Climate Covenant, featuring discussions about environmentalism and faith at Campion House. Rain did not deter a community clean-up off-campus last Sunday, with participation from the Men's Rowing team.
The Office of Sustainability and Hospitality also hosted a guided Ecological Examen and a casual discussion of sustainability and faith on Wednesday. The Show the Waste Event occurred at Kimball Dining Hall, where students could weigh their uneaten leftovers to highlight food waste.
The week culminated with the 57th annual Howland Memorial Lecture, hosted Wednesday evening, featuring former Secretary of State John Kerry discussing geopolitics and sustainability.
