Building Insect Hotels: A Combination of Education, Therapy, and Conservation
In Jastrzębie-Zdrój on August 12, 2025, a unique workshop took place. Participants gathered to build small wooden shelters, known as insect hotels, designed to provide a safe haven for bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial insects [3].
This workshop served as a platform for hands-on learning about insect ecology and the importance of pollinators. Instructors guided participants through the process of building these insect hotels, which included selecting materials, designing, and placing them effectively.
The workshops also had a therapeutic aspect, serving as both occupational therapy and ecology lessons. For the Occupational Therapy Workshop (OTW) participants, the process provided meaningful, creative, and therapeutic activities that supported fine motor skills, concentration, and social interaction through collaborative construction.
Participants not only gained knowledge on how to build more insect hotels in the future but also learned about the role of insects in maintaining plant health. The workshops focused on the importance of pollinating and predatory insects in the ecosystem, emphasising their crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and conservation.
Moreover, the workshops explored ways to support insects in urban and rural areas. By creating these insect hotels, participants were contributing to the sustainability of local insect populations, which are vital for pollination and ecosystem balance.
In essence, the workshop integrated practical ecological education with therapeutic occupational activity, fostering awareness and action for environmental care in the community. It was a testament to the power of hands-on learning and collaborative construction in promoting both personal development and environmental conservation.
