Year-End Plunge Determines Annual Mood

Rewritten Article:

With a chilly blast gripping the city, Reykjavik's shores catered to the brave and the reckless on New Year's Eve, as over a hundred thrill-seekers plunged into the frigid waters of Nauthólsvík. Herdís Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, the chairperson of SJÓR, the Reykjavik Sea Swimming Association, shared her exhilaration:

"It had been a hot minute since we last took the plunge on New Year's Day back in 2020, so this was an absolute blast," she said, bundled up warmth post-dip.

This annual swim differs from other seawater sojourns due to the festive attire amid the frost. Instead of wet-suits, bathing caps, and towels, participants donned their fanciest gowns, suits, and accessories to ring in the new year with a splash - or should we say, a dive?

Yet, the cold wasn't as much of a deterrent as you'd expect. Relevant records for freezing temperatures were set, and the ice was thicker than normal. However, Þorvaldsdóttir stressed caution, despite the unusually cold conditions.

For her part, the chairperson showed up in a shimmering sequined gown that she claimed helped her shrug off the winter chill as she took the leap. Naturally, many others followed suit, with various groups adorning outfits of a similar stylish theme.

While the frosty feat might seem unusual to most, Þorvaldsdóttir believes it sets an empowering tone for the entire year:

"There's just something invigorating about pushing your limits when the ice is thick, the winds are howling, and the water is as cold as a polar bear's nose. And when you conquer that, tackling day-to-day challenges seems a piece of cake," she commented, with a twinkle in her eyes.

The camaraderie and spirit among the participants were palpable as they emerged from the icy embrace of the North Atlantic. And as the year stretched ahead, filled with myriad challenges and opportunities, the group was well-equipped to carve their own paths, inspired by the dip in the chilly ocean. mbl.is/Arnþór
