Newborn Rothschild's Giraffe Born at Leipzig Zoo

Leipzig Zoo is home to a new addition - a baby Rothschild's giraffe, born on a Friday evening. The mother, a five-year-old giraffe cow named Tamika, appears to be doing well along with her new calf.

Tamika and her calf are currently in a neighbouring box, bonding away from the rest of the herd. This period of seclusion is crucial for the mother-calf relationship to strengthen.

The birth took place in the stable, with initial signs observed on the Kiwara-Savannah. Area manager Jens Hirmer expressed his happiness about the smooth birth and the calf's stability.

Rothschild's giraffes, a critically endangered subspecies, are known for their distinctive markings and gentle nature. At Leipzig Zoo, these majestic creatures live in both the spacious outdoor enclosure and the adjacent Hoofed Animal House.

The newborn giraffe stood up just two hours after birth, a testament to its health and strong survival instincts. Within an hour of birth, the calf was successfully seeking its mother's udder, another sign of its vitality.

Giraffe births are unique, as they occur standing up, which can sometimes result in the calf falling from a height. Fortunately, the calf in this case fell only about two meters and managed to stand up quickly.

Once the calf has successfully adapted to its environment, it will move to the Kiwara-Savannah. Visitors can observe the giraffes in bad weather from the Hoofed Animal House.

It's important to note that there are no natural predators at Leipzig Zoo, ensuring a safe environment for the newborn giraffe. The herd includes the father, Matyas, and the brother, Kiano.

While Leipzig Zoo’s public access and educational programs provide opportunities to observe giraffes in settings simulating their natural ecosystem, no explicit announcement or timeline for public viewing of the newborn Rothschild’s giraffe has been made yet. For updates, checking Leipzig Zoo’s official communications or social media channels would provide the latest details on the calf's development and viewing schedule.

Stay tuned for more updates on this adorable new addition to Leipzig Zoo!

In the safeguarded environment of Leipzig Zoo, where Rothschild's giraffes share their days in both the home-and-garden-like Hoofed Animal House and the spacious outdoor Kiwara-Savannah, the recent addition to the herd – a newborn giraffe – is adapting to its pet-friendly surroundings. Once the mother-calf bond has strengthened and the newborn has fully adapted to its environment, it will join the rest of the giraffe family and be open for public viewing, according to Leipzig Zoo's announcements.
